Some time ago I mentioned that I was fortunate enough to win a copy of A Ballad for Sallie, an extremely authentic western written by the wonderfully prolific Judy Alter. You can read that post here.
Well, I am overjoyed to announce that today is the release date of one of Judy’s cozy mysteries, The Perfect Coed, and I was lucky enough to be able to read an ARC. Right off the bat, Judy opens with a double (two days) then a triple (three days) so you know she is going to lead us to a grand slam.
My baseball talk has nothing to do with the book but since October is the most exciting time of baseball season, we all talk the lingo.
Now here’s the double followed by the triple in the opening sentences of the book:
“Susan Hogan drove around Oak Grove, Texas, for two days before she realized there was a dead body in the trunk of her car. And it was another three days before she knew that someone was trying to kill her.”
Dr. Susan Hogan is a college English professor. According to the book jacket she is “smart, pretty—and prickly.” And after reading the book, I have to agree. Her boyfriend Jake is the Chief of Police and he and Susan butt heads at every turn. You can understand where Susan got the tough and determined gene when her Aunt Jenny comes to visit because she knows Susan is in trouble.
I don’t want to give away too much but I will say that the discovery of the corpse of a popular coed in Susan’s car is only the beginning of a twisty-turny mystery with lots of heart.
