What, you may ask, is Bouchercon? Well according to the website, here is the accepted definition:
The World Mystery Convention is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization which holds an annual convention in honor of Anthony Boucher, the distinguished mystery fiction critic, editor and author. It is the world’s premier event bringing together all parts of the mystery and crime fiction community, and is commonly referred to as Bouchercon.
Why, you may ask, do I find great joy in attending Bouchercon?
I’ve been a mystery reader since childhood and, as a kid, I never got to meet any of the numerous folks who called themselves Carolyn Keene while writing the Nancy Drew books . As an adult, I attended Bouchercon Baltimore, and I got to spend some time talking to a number of writers I adored. I could gush about how much I enjoy their work and I was even able to tell Harlan Coben that his latest novel was sitting on my night table waiting for me to come home.
Then there was the time at Bouchercon San Francisco, I crashed a party thinking it was being thrown by a publisher who shall remain nameless but it turned out to be sponsored by Little, Brown and when I sat at the bar and turned to the gentleman on my right, it was none other than Michael Connelly. Did I ever turn into a fan girl! A respectful fan girl and hopefully not annoying, but a definite fan girl.
And the writer in me looks forward to getting out from behind the keyboard and gabbing with my writer friends about the craft of writing, the business of writing, new ideas about publicity and so on.
So if you are a mystery reader, a mystery writer or both, I suggest you participate in Bouchercon. This year it will be held in the gorgeous town of Long Beach, California, November 13-16, 2014. You can click here to find out all about it.
